for a day of discussion, networking and presentations on the opportunities for today’s graduates to join the growing field of sustainable and environmental careers. A keynote presentation by renowned environmental leader David Orr and panel presentations by green industry leaders will highlight the opportunities and challenges facing green jobs today in environmental law, consulting, nonprofits and corporate enterprise. Tabling by numerous companies and organizations with environmental career options and sustainability interests will give students the chance to engage directly in possible career and internship opportunities.

  Event Detail On February 6th, 2015, the Roberts Environmental Center in a new partnership with Student impACT is hosting the first annual Green Careers Conference at Claremont McKenna to energize students around the breadth of environmental career possibilities and foster a discussion on key environmental issues and solutions. The conference will cater to all 5C students interested in creating positive environmental change through their careers. The conference will center on a keynote lunch presentation at the Athenaeum by David Orr, Distinguished Environmental Studies and Politics Professor from Oberlin College. Mr. Orr will be speaking on environmental leadership and will set the tone for the four panel discussions and accompanying career fair. The panel presentations offer a forum for students to engage with environmental experts and 5C graduates working in the environmental field to gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities to create change through green careers. The panel presentations include 12 panelists and focus on careers in environmental business, law, non-profits and consulting. We will also be hosting the career fair alongside the Career Services event taking place in McKenna Auditorium. This provides an opportunity for students to discuss specific career opportunities and facilitate a lasting connection between the Claremont community and innovative environmental firms. Our goals for the Green Careers Conference is to give students a broad perspective of the careers available in the environmental field. Our team intends to show students how environment and economic objectives can be achieved at the same time, and to foster a discussion on environmental solutions through green careers. Ultimately, we hope to motivate students to pursue careers that contribute to positive environmental change and start a tradition of engagement and leadership in environmental professions at the Claremont Colleges. There is growing evidence of a strong student interest in environmental professions. The Roberts Environmental Center received 49 applications for student employee positions this past fall and the student-led environmental club on campus has a student following of nearly 150 individuals. Along with the school’s recent acceptance to the Ashoka Changemaker Campus Initiative, CMC is perfectly poised to be a leader in preparing students for advanced, environmentally responsible careers. Student impACT and the REC share a vision for engaging Claremont students in real-world, environmental issues. We hope this conference will inspire students to think in innovative ways to enhance Claremont McKenna College and the greater Claremont community’s commitment to environmental initiatives.
