Global Climate Change, Summaries of the 2006-2007 Scientific Literature (J. Emil Morhardt, Editor)

Global climate change is suddenly a regular topic in the evening news, thanks partly to the success of Al Gore’s film, “An Inconvenient Truth” and partly because of the latest round of summary reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, both of which occurred while this book was being written. Behind this news is a rising tide of new scientific information about global warming and its effects derived from ice cores in polar regions, sediment cores elsewhere, global climate computer models, and a virtual wave of ecological studies. This book is a series of summaries of some 200 of the most important scientific papers published on these subjects in 2006 and 2007. Our intent is to capture the full scientific significance of this literature in brief journalistic summaries accessible to the lay reader. They can be read in any order, and the format invites browsing for topics of particular current interest.

In addition to comparing the PSI scores across sectors, the analysis includes consideration of company size, and regional base. The printed version includes all of the individual sector reports. The 72 page analysis minus the sector reports can be downloaded below.

There are many issues associated with the use and management of the world’s natural resources. This book addresses the ones that have received the most attention during the past year in the weekly technical journals Science and Nature. Each chapter consists of a brief overview of the issue as it is being discussed herein, followed by summaries of ten or so of the papers we felt were of most import. Almost all of these were published in the previous 12 months, and many are from the two journals mentioned above, often the two journals of choice for announcing significant scientific developments. In most cases we are summarizing the primary technical literature. Thus, what you are about to read on these topics is an indication of the state of the science as of May, 2006.

[fusion_builder_column type=”3_4″ last=”yes”] Roberts Environmental Center 2006 Guide to Ecosystem Services Research (J. Emil Morhardt, Editor)

Ecosystem services are the processes and products nature provides us for free: clean water, clean air, fertile soil, food, and the like. To understand how we are degrading these services and what can be done about it, it is useful to take a look behind the scenes at what scientists are really doing, and what they know so far. This book provides non-technical summaries of over 160 scientific papers published in the last year in 16 different areas of ecosystem services research. For those not familiar with the technical literature, it is a fascinating window into the current state of the planet. It reveals many disturbing trends that will take considerable political and economic effort to reverse. It may seem expedient to ignore these issues and hope that either the science is overly pessimistic or, alternatively, that science can save us. This look at the science suggests otherwise.
